Lyndsay DeFilippo – Our Jersey Shores Physical Therapist

Name: Lyndsay DeFilippo

From: I’m a Cali transplant by way of New York City and could not be happier to have made the trek to the sunny shores of Orange County!

Education: I began my education at Syracuse University where I majored in Physical Anthropology with minors in Biology and Spanish, later moving to NYC where I completed my Doctorate of Physical Therapy coursework at New York University. As a graduate of the class of 2010, I first began my career in the acute care setting working predominantly with patients in the Oncology and Stem Cell transplant units as well as General Medicine floors. I realized quickly that my passion was not in a hospital setting but rather in outpatient Sports and Orthopedics, and to this day have not looked back.

Why did you want be to a Physical Therapist?

As a former athlete myself (soccer and swimming) I have gone through my own plethora of injuries and physical therapy as a result. I will attest to the fact that I was “the worst therapy patient ever” having never done my home exercises and skipping sessions frequently, so really having ended up in a profession where I’m the one prescribing those things is just karma’s way of saying “Well hello there”! That is obviously a joke, as I love what I do and love coming to work each day. Being a therapist allows me to be creative yet also challenges me daily. I look at each injury as a constantly changing puzzle which is only solved when YOU, the patient returns to what you love doing. I like to help with the full recovery process but also like to educate, giving the tools and fundamentals to prevent re-injury and the potential for new injuries. My favorite body parts to work with include shoulder, knee, foot and ankle pathologies both operative and nonoperative. I am a Graston Practitioner and recently became a Certified Kinesiotaping Practitioner.

When not fixing head, shoulders, knees & toes, what are you doing?

In my free time you can find me by the beach paddle boarding, swimming, surfing, traveling the world with my backpack, and shamelessly dancing like a banshee at a concert. I am a diehard futbol fan supporting Real Madrid and the Spanish National Team (minus our lackluster World Cup performance…I’m still bitter) and really just enjoy being able to share new experiences as they are presented to me.

Are you ready to FULLY drink the Rausch PT kool-aide?

I am so excited to be a part of this amazing therapy team, and start this new “West Coast” chapter of my life. Stop on by, say hi, we can talk bagels, lunch meat, what REAL pizza is supposed to taste like, and you can try and keep a straight face every time I attempt to say coffee, office, dog, and water.

More Athletes Than Ever are on the JUICE

For the past few years, athletes have been guzzling beet juice before their races to load up on nitrate, which helps muscles use oxygen more efficiently. We usually think of nitrate as a nutritional villain in foods like hot dogs and bacon, but a growing body of research suggests that it plays a crucial role in cardiovascular health. But, if you don’t care for the taste of beets and you prefer “natural” ways to JUICE.

There are other healthy and natural beverages you can grab and down a glass for amazing health and endurance benefits.

Some include:

1) Watermelon Juice:

  • Reducer of post training muscle soreness and aches due to the amino acid and L-citrulline.

2) Pickle Juice

  • Provides athletes a two-for-one punch with sodium and vinegar in just one shot to help reduce cramps and prevent hydration

3) Dark Tart Cherry Juice

  • Helps to reduce post-race muscle soreness and fatigue due to the enormous amount of antioxidants.

4) Capuacu Juice

  • Chock full of polyphenols and flavonoids— natural ingredients found in cocoa, helps to relieve pain and strengthen immunity.

5) Apple Cider Vinegar

  • An Apple a Day will keep the doctor away is true! Apple Cider Vinegar will provide athletes with amazing performance and recovery benefits.

Soccer Without Borders

With all the hype of the World Cup this month, logically we have to ask ourselves “ok, so what GOOD does soccer do for the communities?”

I have searched and scoured programs that directly affect our community, it’s a bit more challenging than one might expect, but not too surprising either considering the USA is the last country to embrace soccer as a world sport. Never the less, my favorite program I have found thus far is “Soccer Without Borders.”

What do they do?

Well they use the sport of soccer as an avenue for youth to experience and gain positive and personal growth. They focus on the “Whole Person” giving them tools to understand their body, mind, power of voice, and overcome challenges as individuals and working as a team.

What communities do they serve?

World wide as well as local areas. Soccer Without Borders is just that…. without borders. In the state of California they serve Oakland & Los Angeles currently with seasonal and core programs and touch Orange County with camps. Internationally they can be spotted in Nicaragua and Uganda.

They offer 3 different programs depending on the geographic location and resources.

  • Core- Offer year round programs
  • Seasonal- Offer programs in areas when summer months and weather permit (26 weeks a year)
  • Camps- These programs are both independent and support the core programs

If you are a soccer enthusiast, love to watch kids grow, develop and gain confidence then you should get involved and be the difference you want to see.

There is a better way to Run!

Each and every runner possesses a unique running style based on their injuries, anatomy, and experiences. We all have our little hitches and traits, however, there is a better way to run. Every runner has inefficiencies in their gait that cost energy and speed. A Run Right will help you to identify these inefficiencies to enable you to run faster and stronger for longer.

Here’s how it works:

  • Your Run Right analysis begins with a comprehensive physical evaluation to determine your muscle recruitment patterns, range of motion, pains, and running background. Following the physical evaluation you will have a chance to experience the Alter-G Treadmill to have your gait analyzed. Video recording will be utilized from 4 different camera angles to get a complete view of your running gait.
  • Following the video recording, we will walk you through your gait frame by frame. Inefficiencies and biomechanical flaws will be identified and strategies to correct them will be provided.
  • After the analysis, we will put you back on the Alter-G treadmill to practice your efficient gait with running cues.
  • The analysis will finish with us walking you through your results. Strategies for improvement and necessary strengthening regimen will be discussed along with key exercises to ensure a successful home program.
  • All runners will be sent home with their results, a self massage ball, and the knowledge on how to Run Right.

Everyone can benefit from a Run Right!

Optimistically, positive stuff happen…

I watched a rad show this week on Netflix. But if you know me, you know my TV watching is a bit eclectic. Yes, I watch the Kardashians, Real Housewives of the OC, Wicked Tuna, Deadliest Catch, Brad Brad World, and my new favorite Ladies of London! (Caroline Rules). Judge if you must… But I’ve found a new line of shows on Netflix called TED Talks. You may know some TED Talks from web searches or youtube. If you don’t know TED Talks- you should. They are a non-profit organization devoted to “spreading ideas”. Usually in the form of short but powerful talks. Started in the mid 80’s; Technology, Entertainment, and Design. But think science, business, and global issues talked through by really entertaining people in a short enough time span to keep you tuned in.

One episode caught my attention, titled “Optimism Bias” by Tali Sharot. This episode by Tali Sharot gives some great… Not only do “Optimist’s” get sick less, have better psychological health, stronger immune systems, are more attractive, heal faster, can handle stress better, the list goes on and on… But as Dr. Sharot points out, optimism has its challenges as well. Most optimists can be lead astray while making tough decisions because they only see the “bright side”.

I know this to be true in my own decision making models. I literally have to force myself to look at the other side of the coin, while making tough decisions. My default is to see the positive opportunity first, but that doesn’t make a good or well thought decision. By forcing myself to think or plan for the what if’s, the best decision can be made. But being an optimist, makes me do one thing really well. It makes me work harder. Because I know my optimism can be achieved. Not by sitting back and letting “everything take its course”, but by pushing through, over, and above to make the positive stuff happen.

Optimism and Positivity should stimulate you to make the optimistically, positive stuff happen! So look on the bright side today, but do it actively.

Restore Your Body

This time of year, we hear a lot about RECOVERY. Recovery drinks, recovery compression, recovery time. Recovery from racing is incredibly important, make no mistake, equally important is the RESTORATIVE element.

What does “restorative” mean? In our context, it means revive or renew health, strength and spirits.

Day in and day out we work, we train and we run our mind and body ragged. So why not be gentle to it? Allow ourselves to have a little TLC and embrace the importance of restoring our bodies.

Mentally, escape from the daily grind, the stress, and let our mind go silent. Embrace the pleasure of letting go. When we allow our mind to relax, physically our body will follow suit. Of course, this is always easier said than done.

So how can you restore your body?

Try out Dynamic Touch’s “Deep Relaxation Massage.” Sometimes the spa experience massage is just what your bodies needs. The “Deep Relaxation Massage” helps reset the bodies nervous system, flushes and balances stress hormones, improves digestion and rejuvenates the mind, body and soul.

The next time you are feeling like you have hit a wall and just need a break, jump on Dynamic Touch and schedule your mini escape.

Best Day Season Starts

With school ending and summer time kicking into full gear, it’s easy to get caught up with endless days at the beach. Sun up to sun down, making sure the oceans still salty and the sands still warm. This year grab the whole family, spend the day and the beach and give one special kid the BEST DAY ever.

Most of you know Jill – she is the “Jill of ALL trades”. She bounces around the clinic helping patients with exercises, handles our social media and drives the Rehab-u-lance to various events. When summer time hits and she’s not here from sun up to sun down you can find her volunteering with the Best Day Foundation.

The Best Day helps build confidence in kids with special needs through various water activities. Surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding and more. They have chapters dotted along the california coastline including Orange County, Ventura and Santa Barbara. So, whether you are hanging out in the OC or plan on taking a road trip, there is always an opportunity to give back to the community.

And truly, not only will you make a difference in these childrens lives, they too will show you how to have your BEST DAY.

Best Day Foundation, Check’em out!

I like my bubble…

You’ve heard it called the “Orange Curtain” the “South County Bubble,” but I’m here to say, “I like my bubble!”. I love the local scene and our community. I’m a huge fan of local restaurants like Avila’s El Ranchito and Dublin 4, and I’m really into local racing too – like Thursday Night Crit @ Great Park. AWESOME!!

Since I can remember, I’ve been a fan of small, local businesses. After all I grew up in my parent’s restaurant. They had some sweet ones like Acacia, The Rausch’s, and Hungry Hombre. My mom tells a rad story of me, at about 3 years old, acting as the host at the Hungry Hombre. Apparently, I would sit everyone at the same table and just tell them “scoot over!”

We live in such a big place with so many things to do, busy schedules to keep, deadlines to make that it’s really nice to connect with what’s around you. So strive to connect and utilize the great things, businesses, opportunities, and events. These businesses are working their tails off to provide great experiences, great food and great fun.

So relax and enjoy the great stuff that’s right in our “bubble”. In fact, we put together a collective list of local events at the bottom of each newsletter just for you. Check ‘em out. We’ll see you there!

Happy Anniversary to Us!

It’s impossible for me to forget the very first day of Rausch PT. Such a leap of faith, such a step forward, such work in progress…

It still is, a work in progress really. We are always finding ways to improve, new services to help more people, and new ways to deal with the ever changing healthcare and insurance worlds. But the stamp of the first day of Rausch PT is so clear in my mind. It was pretty simple really. I only saw two patients, but they were the first two patients of the beginning of a legacy of Rausch PT. Now, you two patients know exactly who you are, and I can’t thank you enough for your trust, support, and foundation.

We’ve grown just a little bit (wink) since our opening in 2006. I am so blessed to be surrounded by 25+ amazing professionals in the clinic and Pilates studio.  We’ve seen so many changes over the past few years, but none so much as the last year. #fastpassPT has made it so much easier to treat injured folks quickly and without any unnecessary delay. Just come on in and start getting better.

Our newest addition to the clinic is the Performance Lab. Our growing clinic has the space and our staff the expertise to redefine your performance, help you gain a competitive advantage and keep you well. The experience of the Performance Lab is just what you are looking for to take care of your body and Out.Perform your competition.

Come join us for lunch on May 5th to Celebrate our Anniversary and see our growing clinic and Performance Lab. We’ll be hosting Avila’s El Ranchito and Marg’s. So come say hi, connect with your health, and enjoy lunch on us!

See you on May 5th,
